Glossary Of Terms - J

Jaundice Journal BCPA Journal & index Jugular vein

Jaundice is caused by an accumulation in the blood of bilirubin, a yellow-brown bile pigment. The skin and whites of the eyes look yellowish. It is a disorder of the liver. This is quite common in newborn babies.

Joule. See Joule under Calorie.

Journal. One meaning is a regular publication that contains serious articles on a subject, based on research and previous publications. Eg British Medical Journal BMJ, The Lancet , New England Journal of Medicine NEJM, …

The BCPA Journal BCPA J has similar articles in six issues per year. I, Dr Richard Maddison, was appointed Editor in 2005. An index is below.

Back numbers from then till some months ago are available on the BCPA website at http://www.bcpa.co.uk/PreviousJournals.htm. Our BCPA policy is not to put on the website back issues within the last few months.

As Editor, I use the short form J173p12 to mean Issue 173 page 12.

J142-145 were in 2005; J146-151 in 2006, J152-157 in 2007; J158-163 in 2008; J164-170 in 2009; J170-J175 in 2010; J176-J181 in 2011.

The following gives an index to BCPA Journal articles that someone might want to look up. In many cases the journal articles give sources and further information than the Glossary entries.
